Kapital's origins are closely connected to Kojima, an Okayama region internationally associated with Japanese denim production. Founder Toshikiyo Hirata developed an interest in American denim and vintage clothing after spending time in the United States during the 1980s. Returning to Japan, he immersed himself in denim production and established the business that would eventually become Kapital.
The label's creative identity changed significantly when Kiro Hirata joined his father in 2002. Kiro had studied art in the United States and worked at Japanese fashion company 45rpm before returning to the family business. His more experimental perspective combined with Toshikiyo's expertise in traditional denim production to create Kapital's distinctive mixture of craft, Americana, art, and eccentricity.
