Georges Favre-Jacot founded Zenith in 1865 at just 22 years old with an ambitious vision: to manufacture every watch component within a single facility. This vertically integrated approach revolutionized Swiss watchmaking and enabled Zenith to achieve remarkable precision standards. The company earned international recognition after winning the Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition, inspiring the official adoption of the name Zenith.
Zenith's defining achievement arrived in 1969 with the launch of the El Primero, one of the first automatic chronograph movements ever produced. Operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour (5Hz), the movement allowed precise measurement to 1/10th of a second and became one of horology's greatest technical milestones.
Remarkably, the El Primero survived the Quartz Crisis thanks to watchmaker Charles Vermot, who secretly preserved the manufacturing tools and technical plans. The calibre later powered the Rolex Daytona from 1988 to 2000, cementing its legendary status.
